World Premiere for the 2013 overall winner: Live Handball Tracking by Kinexon




Data and technology are increasingly driving the development of major sports, not just in terms of performance on the court but also in the arena and on television, as sport looks to grow audiences and fan loyalty by offering that extra special something. Kinexon has been invited by the European Handball Federation (EHF) to showcase its precise sports tracking solution in Vienna. They have equipped the Austrian Champions League participant Fivers Handball Team. The coach was fascinated: "Kinexon allows us to work more accurately, optimising the positioning of individual players in defense." Kinexon tested a range of new technologies that could revolutionise the game in the future, to provide coaches with detailed live statistics and bring fans closer to the game than has ever been possible before.

Until now, indoor sports could not yet benefit from the use and high potential of tracking data, due to technological limitations. GPS technology does simply not work in indoor environments. The overall ESNC winner 2013 and ESA BIC Bavaria alumni, Kinexon, offers a real-time indoor tracking system enabling centimeter-accurate tracking of athletes. Thereby it is possible to "step up" and optimise the game for coaches, players, media and none the less important for the spectators.

At the EHF demo, all players of the Fivers Handball Team, the referee as well as the handball itself were equipped with a small Kinexon sensor. Receivers were positioned around the field and communicated with the sensor. The receivers transmitted the radio signal to a small mobile server, which then processed the data in real-time. Statistics were displayed in real-time on the screens of laptops and tablets at the sideline.

Kinexon GmbH

ESA Business Incubation Center Baviaria
Kinexon was incubated at the ESA BIC Bavaria from January 2013 until July 2014. The ESA BIC Bavaria seeks entrepreneurs using space technologies in a non-space environment. That does not mean rocket science, but applies to multiple application fields such as navigation and positioning, communications techniques, Earth observation, materials, processes, signals or robotics.

ESA's Business Incubation Centre Bavaria was launched in 2009 and is ever since managed by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO). ESA BIC Bavaria and its renowned partners - DLR, Airbus Defense and Space, Fraunhofer IIS and Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft Berchtesgadener Land - provide startups with financial and technical support at four branch offices: Oberpfaffenhofen, Ottobrunn, Nürnberg and Berchtesgadener Land www.esa-bic.de
